15-16 VMCC WECHS
Welcome to WECHS
July 29, 2015
To: WECHS Classes of 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020
From: Lisa Cummings, Principal
Subject: Opening of School
The first day of school is just around the corner and we hope you have enjoyed the summer break and are ready to return for a great school year! WECHS had another amazing year in 2014-2015 with 70% of our graduates earning a Wake Tech degree or diploma, five earning Certified Nursing Assistant certification, four earning Phlebotemy certification, and one earning Emergency Medical Technician certification. Students earned all of this in addition to a high school diploma within five years. The class of 2015 earned over $736,000 in scholarships and grants in addition to their ‘free’ college credit hours earned at WTCC. In their spare time, WECHS students also served countless hours of volunteer service at WakeMed! Thank you and congratulations to our students and supportive families.
We have had a busy summer gearing up for 2015-2016:
Students participated in WakeMed Internships, http://www.wakemed.org/
Students competed at the H.O.S.A. National Conference in Anaheim, CA, http://www.hosa.org/
Ms. Farrow, Ms. Lupher, and Mr. Eaton completed teacher externships with WakeEd Partnership http://www.wakeed.org/teaching-stem-workplace-classroom and NIEHS http://www.niehs.nih.gov/
WECHS staff presented on Metacognition and Academic Success at the NC New Schools Summer Institute in Concord, http://ncnewschools.org/
WECHS staff hired a Dean of Students, English Teacher, and a Coordinator (or will soon).
Schedules: On the first day of school, August 11, students on both campuses will receive their schedule. Student access to PowerSchool has changed. Students must now create a NCEdCloud account. Directions are on our homepage, http://healthscienceec.wcpss.net. North Campus students received directions in the June letter regarding their schedules. This letter is archived on the website under Principal’s Corner.
Transportation: Express Bus Routes are posted now and Enloe Bus Routes for WECHS students should post on August 14th, http://webarchive.wcpss.net/school-directory/bus-routes/583.html. WECHS students are assigned Express Routes for days traditional school is not in session and are allowed to ride assigned Enloe HS Bus Routes on the days traditional is in session. On days that Enloe HS is not in session, all WECHS students will need to ride Express Routes or carpool. For example, the first nine days of school are Express Route days, August 11-21, 2015. (Busses will take students to Enloe HS where they will then catch a shuttle bus to either PHS Campus or N. Campus. Students need to catch the first available shuttle when transporting from Enloe HS. Late arrivals due to waiting for the last shuttle will not be excused.)
Bus Updates: Waiting for a late bus? Check this site for live updates if you can and/or call the PHS main office, 919-212-5800. http://www.wcpss.net/Page/1903
Carpool: Copies of the PHS carpool procedures for both campuses are included in this mailing. All families MUST follow these procedures. The WTCC Police staff will always help if you have questions. To avoid delays and traffic issues on Sunnybrook Road for PHS Campus, please stagger your arrival times for carpool. If your last name begins with A-M, please plan to drop off by 7:10 am and pick up at 2:25 pm. If your last name begins with N-Z, please plan to drop off by 7:15 am and pick up by 2:40 pm. Students will wait in the Student Lounge until 7:20 am when they are sent upstairs to class. Students will be dismissed from class at 2:20 in the afternoon. Students not picked up at carpool by 2:45 pm will return to the building to ensure safe supervision until their ride arrives. On PHS campus, please call the school at 919-212-5800 to have your student dismissed to carpool after 2:45 or call your student directly.
After School: Success Lab runs 2:45-5:00 Tuesday-Thursday on PHS Campus. Students staying after school on Monday or Friday or for reasons other than Success Lab on PHS need to have secured permission with WECHS staff who will supervise them until transportation arrives. For safety reasons, students on N. Campus are only allowed to stay after school if it is pre-arranged with WECHS staff.
Student Drivers: On PHS Campus, student drivers must be pre-approved by Administration and WTCC prior to driving to school. Applications are available in the offices on both campuses. All WTCC and WCPSS school rules apply to student drivers and their cars on both campuses. N. Campus students need to plan ahead for traffic and parking delays related to construction.
Calendar: The Student Activity Calendar is maintained on our website, http://healthscienceec.wcpss.net/student-activity-calendar. This is an excellent resource of timely information.
School Messenger: In addition to a weekly Friday phone message from Principal Cummings, announcements are often communicated on our website. Here, you will also find the 2015-2016 calendar, important informational links, and access to staff websites, http://healthscienceec.wcpss.net/.
Lunch: Students will order lunch daily from a modified list provided by WCPSS Child Nutrition Services (CNS). Students will eat at either 10:30 am or 11:00 am on PHS campus and during their open time on N. Campus. For lunch calendars and free and reduced lunch information (FRL), please go to the link below. A refrigerator and microwave are available for student use on PHS Campus. FRL information and applications are also available in the office on each campus, http://www.wcpss.net/Page/1847 . Students on N. Campus must have an approved, signed permission form to leave campus during the school day.
Sports: Interested in playing sports? Check out the Enloe athletics website. Please note that many sports hold meetings and workouts before school starts. Check the site or call the Athletic Director for complete information. http://enloeathletics.assn.laa
College Placement Exam: Remember that all sophomores will take the WTCC college placement test in November, the NC DAP. There are many great resources online, http://www.waketech.edu/become-student/testing-center.
Emergencies: With students spread out between multiple buildings on two campuses, Principal Cummings utilizes Remind, www.Remind.com to communicate messages quickly in the event of an emergency. For example, if WCPSS announces a one-hour early release, to ensure all students are notified (especially on N. Campus), we ask that students sign up for this service. We will exhaust all efforts to contact students face-to-face, but will use Remind as a backup. Additionally, we will use this service to communicate information quickly, such as in the event of a Code Red or Yellow. To join, https://www.remind.com/join/wechsst .
Wake Tech Warn: The WTCC system of communicating to students and staff. Community members can sign up for alerts as well. Alerts can be campus specific. http://www.waketech.edu/about-wake-tech/administrative-offices/campus-police/emergencies
During the first week of school, we will train students on both campuses how to respond in a variety of emergency situations to ensure their safety.
Bus Crossing Procedures: With the start of the new school year, WCPSS students will find a change in the process for boarding the school bus. 1) When the bus driver turns on the red flashing lights and extends the stop arm, motorists will stop. 2) In the new boarding process, students will wait until the crossing control arm fully deploys before leaving their bus stop to board the bus. The new rule: Students wait for the crossing control arm to fully deploy before leaving the sidewalk to board the bus. All students will be trained at the beginning of the school year.
Volunteering at WakeMed: The window to sign up for volunteering at WakeMed is only open a few times a year. The next date is posted as August 3rd, http://www.wakemed.org/landing.cfm?id=2901. This is the only time for new volunteers to sign up for the fall track. It is competitive, so answer professionally!
PTSA: WECHS PTSA needs you! Information will be available at all school events and in the Day 1 Student Information Packet that will be sent home.
A copy of this letter is posted on the home page of our website (and archived under the Principal’s Corner) so that you can directly access the links.
If you have any questions, please give us a call. We look forward to seeing you on the first day of school, Tuesday, August 11, 2015. The school day begins promptly at 7:25 am and dismissal is at 2:20 pm on PHS Campus and 7:45 am and 1:50 pm on the N. Campus. All N. Campus students must report to Building C (formerly A), fourth floor when they arrive in the morning to sign in and place a lunch order.
As always, if you have an emergency and need to reach someone, you can always call or text Principal Cummings on her mobile, 919-398-3451.
